I made the mistake of watching Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu immediately after an incredible masterpiece piece of cinema that will stay with me forever: Y tu mamá también. And so, forgive me if the following review is a bit harsh.
I should’ve known Nosferatu wouldn’t live up to my expectations. I should have known when I asked my friend—who had just seen the movie—how it was, and she said, you’ll love the rat cameos. That should have been my sign. If rat cameos are the highlight of a film, it’s probably not going to be life-changing. (although the rats were great, tbh)
I guess I was just expecting more. Don’t get me wrong—the movie was a beautifully crafted tribute to the original, but that’s all it felt like to me: a tribute. It didn’t push any boundaries or offer anything revolutionary in terms of plot, as I had hoped. Honestly, if it had been 30 minutes shorter, I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more.
